Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) is a bidirectional, high speed wireless networking system like WiFi under research. Li-Fi is an example optical wireless communications far better and faster than WiFi which works on radio frequency communication model.
Research
Professor Harald Haas, from the University of Edinburgh in the UK, is pioneer in research of Li-Fi. The research is under process since 2010. It is being funded by Edinburgh's Institute for Digital Communications. Visible light communications (VLC) is not very new subject. The main problem was to increase in communication speed. Slowly, research aided them them to increase their speed. They foresee it to reach downloading speed with 5 GB/sec.
Speed
It has experimentally proved that Li-Fi is 100 times faster than WiFi. It has reached its maximum speed at 1024 Gigabytes per Second and downloading speed of 1GB/sec. This mean you can easily download HD movie in a single second.
Working
Li-Fi is a model of Visible light communications (VLC). It uses Light Emitting Diodes(LED) for sending and receiving signals and data.
Advantage
Li-Fi is much cheaper than WiFi. The advantage being suggested is that as light can not pass through walls, therefore it cant be used for long distances. It has been experimented that by wall interference Li-Fi speed decreases by 30%. This will also reduce the chance of hacking internet by others users.
Future
Future is Li-Fi. Different companies are making arrangements for production of Li-Fi devices. By 2018 it is estimated that sale of these device would increase to 6 Billion Dollars. Lifi’s creator Has stated that soon the world will be using internet with the help of microchips placed in LED light bulbs.
